A 90-year-old Asda worker at a supermarket in Trafford Park is receiving recognition as the oldest worker at the business.

Ron Ellis has worked at the supermarket on Barton Dock Road for around 18 years after the end of a stint at a steelworks.

Mr Ellis, a widower with two children and two grandchildren, has worked in customer service and on the checkouts and he has no intention at all of retiring from his four-days-a-week role.

The 90-year-old received recognition for his work when colleagues and customers sang him Happy Birthday and showered him with presents during the day of his 90th birthday last month.

He said: "A lot of people don't know how old I am so it was a surprise. It will remain in my memory for the rest of my days.

"I love having a chat with the customers. We talk about all sorts, including football, because I support Manchester City while a lot of my colleagues and customers support Manchester United. It is all good humoured though as we are a friendly store."

In 2022, co-workers put Mr Ellis forward for an Asda Service Superstar Award after he paid £42 for a shopper's shopping out of his own pocket because the shopper left their card at home.

These co-workers paid tribute to Mr Ellis with one trading manager at the store saying he is "a true gentleman".
