WYTHENSHAWE Hospital is staking its claim as Britain’s greenest hospital.
The centre has taken measures to become more environmentally sustainable and is one of the few hospitals to have been awarded a Carbon Trust Standard mark.
Some of the steps taken by the hospital include: the installation of two biomass boilers, a rainwater harvesting programme, ground source heating pumps, car sharing schemes and an overall energy reduction of 26 per cent since 2007.
At a recent conference, Professor Ashley Woodcock, who shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore, spoke about the importance of lowering carbon emissons, while staff were encouraged to wear green to mark their support for the scheme.
