SALE OFFICER AND FIREWOMAN MARRIED Lieut. N. D. Jones and Miss E. Girdlestone The Wedding took place at St. Mary’s Church, Sale, Cheshire on Saturday 22nd May 1943 of Second –Lieutenant Neil Darroch Jones, only son of Mr and Mrs H. L. Jones of “Bovington” Woodlands Road, Sale, and Miss Edna Girdlestone, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs S. Girdlestone, of “Berchem” Park Road, Sale. The bride is a leading firewoman in the National Fire Service at Sale, while the bridegroom, an old Stretford Grammar School boy, is with the Royal Corps of Signals. The Vicar, the Rev. A. Maryon Watson officiated, and the hymn “Lead us, Heavenly Father, Lead us” was sung during the service. The bride wore satin brocade, cut on medieval lines, with a head-dress of ostrich feathers and a tulle veil. She also wore a double link of pearls, and carried a bouquet of red roses and lily of the valley. There were two bridesmaids, Miss Hilda Girdlestone (sister of the bride) and Miss Marjorie Jones (sister of the bridegroom). They were attired in white net over white taffeta , and head-dresses of forget-me-nots. Bouquets of forget-me-nots were carried. The bride’s mother wore navy blue trimmed with white, and a hat of ostrich feathers with a navy veil. She carried a bouquet of tea roses. The bridegroom’s mother wore violet blue, with a black hat and a spray of pink carnations. Sergeant Douglas Feachnie, of the Royal Corps of Signals, was best man, while Messrs John Dean, Eric Smith and Geoffrey Vincent were groomsmen. After a reception at Park House, Sale, the bride and bridegroom left for Llandudno, the bride travelling in a burgundy two-piece, with navy accessories. "Neil and Edna left their home in Brooklands Rd, Sale for the Threshing Barn in Monkton, Devon in 2003, to be close to their Son and Daughter in Law, Michael and Jean Jones".
