Next week, Italian-American crooning legend Tony Bennett will turn 95 years old.
Having recently read Tony's autobiography I was amazed to learn about the remarkable life he has had so far.
From serving in the Second World War, where he took part in liberating camps, to his journey into and through the music industry, Tony has kept himself current, winning countless awards and he's also managed to bridge the generation gap several times throughout his career.
Now, in spite of approaching 95 years old and living with Alzheimer’s disease, Tony is remarkably still performing. On his birthday next week he is to perform with Lady Gaga at Radio City Hall in New York. Not many 95 year olds can attest to such an accomplishment.
As regular readers of my column will know, I am a huge Tony Bennett fan. He was an example given to me when I first learned to sing and he has really been the soundtrack to my life.
I wanted to give something back to Tony for his decades of beautiful music and have come up with an idea to salute him.
I am trying to get as many people as possible, from all over the world, to play his signature song 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco' at 6pm on his birthday - Tuesday August 3 - to fill the airwaves with the sounds of Tony on his birthday.
I think it will be a lovely gesture of love and support to a man who has given us so much through his music.
At 6pm on the day I will not be playing the song myself but rather singing it as my opening song at my 'Salute to Tony Bennett' concert at Mulino in Urmston.
If you would like to book a table to attend my performance you can do so by telephoning Mulino on 0161 286 7819.
Also, on Sunday August 1 I will be performing at the 'Come Together Urmston' concert organised by Roy Matthews at Urmston Sports Club on Moorside Road in Urmston.
I'll be performing songs from the Great American Songbook. The event starts at 1pm and I will be on stage from 5.30pm to 6pm.
There are some great local acts on the bill. Tickets are only £5 and you can get yours from the Cobblers Den on Flixton Road, Urmston or from the Sports Club itself.
So, I hope you will all take part in playing 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco' at 6pm on 3rd August and join those around the world who I've asked to do the same.
What a great way to say thank you for the music to a remarkable performer for his lifetime of entertaining us all. Happy 95th birthday Tony.
