I CAN'T remember the last time I went to the theatre and experienced the whole gamut of human emotions.
But then again, there aren't many plays quite like Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, the Frank McGuiness masterpiece inspired by the experiences of Beirut hostages Terry Waite, John McCarthy and Brian Keenan.
Sitting captivated in Altrincham Garrick's Lauriston Studio, I laughed and I very nearly cried, particularly during the final scene, which is one of the most moving I've seen on stage. I shared the despair of the hostages and then I felt uplifted and inspired by the courage of three very different characters we come to care deeply about.
Performances from David Beddy (Edward), Martin Oldfield (Adam) and David Reynolds (Michael) are one step up from outstanding and director Geoff Holman has created a production that holds your attention in a vice like grip.
This production certainly wouldn't be out of place on a professional stage and it must surely clean up when the amateur theatre awards are dished out.
I also liked the way McGuiness develops the character of Michael - we see him grow in stature emotionally and become something of a rock for the other two.
This is a writer of great importance and I hope to see more of his work in the not too distant future.
I implore you not to miss this evening of five star theatre - these performances won't be bettered in Trafford for a very long time. Magnificent.
