Preview - Mr Wonderful,The Club Theatre
FROM the tale of a peasant and a King in 900AD we fast forward to a story set in the 1990s for the Club Theatre's third production of the season, Mr Wonderful.
Written by James Robson, it's the story of a young woman looking for "Mr Right." The story also follows the fortunes of a factory worker called Norma who cares for her bedridden mother, Phoebe.
Norma is also trying to find her "Mr Wonderful," through a dating agency and after several attempts she meets Geoff, who seems reputable and they leave for a weekend away.
However, Phoebe, whose only real friend and own "Mr Wonderful" is her teddy bear, has been left Geoff's mobile and discovers that the man her daughter is dating has one or two skeletons in his cupboard.
The Club Theatre is delighted to welcome Peter Lawless as the director for this production. Due to family circumstances beyond her control, the original director had to withdraw and Peter stepped in.
"It has been a lot of hard work getting the preparation done but we have got there and I am delighted with the cast that I have. They are working well together and the play is coming together nicely. The play is one I think will appeal to many with its serious aspects laced with some lovely, humorous moments," he says, adding that the cast includes Club Theatre debutant John Wagner in the role of Geoff.
This is a light comedy drama that may strike a chord with anyone who has played the dating game through the "lonely hearts" adverts, dating agencies or as it is now done, on the Internet dating sites.
Rick Bowen * The Club Theatre presents Mr Wonderful by James Robson from January 27 to February 2 at 7.40pm. If you would like to book tickets, call 0161 928 1113.
