STOLEN cars are finding their way back on to the market place and in to the hands of unsuspecting buyers warn Trafford police.
350,000 cars are stolen every year in the UK, many of which are being offered for sale to buyers looking for a bargain.
Every year in the UK over 3 million used cars change hands privately while buying privately involves taking a real risk says Pc Tony Crompton, Trafford's crime reduction advisor.
He explained: "If a privately purchased bargain' turns out to have been previously stolen there is a good chance the police will eventually identify it. The buyer will probably lose both the car and the cash they parted with for it.
"Before money changes hands the car's history should be checked properly, its easy and relatively cheap, either by telephone or online."
He added: "Don't let pound signs blur your judgement. All the buyer needs is the registration number and the car's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) usually found on a small plate within the engine compartment."
Pc Crompton added that sellers of vehicles are also putting themselves in danger by selling them at times, places and circumstances where they are at risk.
His top tips for selling your car safely are: * Let family or friends know when and where you are selling the vehicle * Always make sure you are able to trace the potential buyer by taking contact details * Never be outnumbered, try to get a friend or relative to be with you and witness the sale For further information contact Trafford's crime reduction team on 0161 856 7546.
