MULTI-million pound proposals to transform land off Moss Lane in Altrincham have been unveiled.
The major development which is set to include a 3,000-seater permanent ice rink, an extreme sports centre, a 100-bed hotel as well as office, retail and restaurant space is the latest in a long line of regeneration plans for the town.
Costing £120million the scheme pioneered by Nikal and David McLean Developments and backed by Trafford council, will be named after Altair, the brightest star in the northern hemisphere constellation of Aquilla.
Jonny Wrigley, development director at Nikal, said: "Altair is an exceptional development and creating the brand is integral to the scheme. We wanted a name that truly represents the positioning of the development and the future of Altrincham as the premier retail and leisure destination once its regeneration is completed.
"Altair is a vibrant and exciting development opportunity for all business and private interests both financially and culturally. It will transform Altrincham by merging its market town roots with a 21st century lifestyle experience to create the brightest star in the north'."
Work on the site opposite the Tesco store is expected to begin in Spring 2008 and take three years to complete.
As well as the ice rink, sport centre and hotel, there will be 15,000sq metres of retail and leisure accommodation, luxury apartments, 5,000sq metres of office space and two public spaces.
l Proposals for the second phase of the Stamford Quarter development have been submitted to Trafford council for planning permission. They include the replacement of the existing multi-storey car park and units 26-50 on George Street with a new seven-storey car park and a building comprising of two floors of retail space and a management suite above.
There would also be a link bridge from the car park over George Street.
