A DECISION on the way in which children's and maternity services will be delivered across Trafford and the rest of region is due to be made tommorrow.

And the results from the 'Making it Better' review could have a serious impact on the Trafford area with Trafford General's services under threat.

The crunch meeting of the joint committee of primary care trusts is to make a decision following a major consultation exercise this year.

The review recommends having a smaller number of larger hospitals providing inpatient care across Greater Manchester for pregnant women, children, young people and sick babies. The blueprint is for eight sites with overnight children's wards and three neo-natal intensive care units.

The services that face the axe include Trafford General's children's ward, maternity unit and special care baby unit.

Wythenshawe Hospital's neo-natal unit could also be closed, with neo-natal care concentrated at St Mary's Royal Oldham and Royal Bolton. Under this option, Wythenshawe would continue to have a maternity unit, with high dependency and special care cots.

The decision-making meeting will be the culmination of more than six years of work in the biggest healthcare consultations ever to take place. Making It Better' generated an unprecedented 51,000 responses from the public, patients and staff, during the formal consultation.

The results of the review will be online as soon as they are available.
