messengernewspapers.co.uk brings you an exclusive weekly Ashes column from Lancashire legend Warren Hegg.

To call the result in the second Test a disappointment would be a massive understatement.

I think anyone who knows cricket and loves the game would see it as a complete disaster.

There's been a lot said about the sides that have been picked for the first Test but when you get yourself into a position where you've scored 500-plus runs in the first innings you can't go on to lose the Test.

Guys who let us down in the second innings are guys who were brought in specifically for their batting strength, guys like Ashley Giles and Geraint Jones.

I've played a lot of cricket with Ashley in the past and he's a terrific cricketer and an instrumental part in winning back the Ashes.

But there's no team that's ever gone to Australia and won a Test series without attacking, so we have to go with Monty Panesar.

We have still got a chance of retaining the Ashes so it's certainly not too late.

Chris Read should never have been left out of the side either because he did nothing to suggest he sould be dropped in the Tests he did play.

I feel really sorry for him because he deserves his place but it would be too late to bring him back in now.

Some people are doing him a great injustice to suggest he's not a good enough batsman. He's not only a very good wicketkeeper, he can chip in with plenty of runs down the order as well.

Duncan Fletcher has made a rod for his own back with the selections he has made and he has to stand up and be counted, take the blame for these mistakes.

Who's picking the England cricket team these days, the players certainly shouldn't be. You wouldn't have John Terry, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard picking the England football team.

Fletcher is the coach and he's paid to make those decisions so he can't suddenly heap responsibility on the players.

I'm pleased with the way Freddie has led the team, he's done a decent enough job with the resources at his disposal so you can hardly point the finger of blame at him.

Knowing Freddie, he will back his players all the way and he will need them to stand up and give their support to him.

The only guys who have really done that so far are Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood, they have proved to be real plus points and have batted fantastically well so far.

But we have to keep faith with the likes of Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook as well, both are talented cricketers and Cook especially is the future of the national team.

You've got to feel for Jimmy Anderson though because he's not played much cricket this year and to be pushed into this kind of situation is unfair.

The way Steve Harmison has been bowling, Jimmy's had to assume the responsibilities of a senior bowler and people forget he's still only a young lad.

But when he's bowling on top form and he's firing on all cylinders, he's a fantastic bowler and an asset to England.

The team have now got to just put their setbacks behind them and go on to Perth with a fresh outlook.

It will be a different situation entirely, with a lot more pace in the wicket, although I know Southern Australia haven't lost there in a long time.

My prediction of an England 2-1 series win is out the window but they can still turn things around.
