A STRETFORD and Urmston sea cadets unit is planning to create some mouth watering meals, thanks to a grant of £4,600 from the Local Network Fund to refurbish its kitchen.
The fund, which is part of the Community Foundation, is a Government scheme that supports initiatives that open up new opportunities for youngsters.
The grant has been used to completely refurbish the galley at the Bradshaw Lane base in Stretford, providing the cadets with top of the range equipment to train for their cooking stewardship proficiency badges and to cater for visiting cadets.
Ian Currie, chairman of the Stretford and Urmston Sea Cadets Unit, said: "We were thrilled to receive the grant. Our unit is more than 60-years-old and I think the original kitchen dated back almost as far!
"We've been able to totally update the kitchen with a new cooker, fridge, boiler and cupboards which means the cadets are able to train for their cooking stewardship with modern equipment.
"We also play host to visiting cadets who stay overnight and so it's really important that we have a functioning kitchen."
Rob Malyan, of the Community Foundation, said: "This is a perfect example of how these funds should be used. The kitchen refurbishment will make a real difference for the sea cadets and we are delighted to support them."
