A NATIONAL radio show will broadcast live from Dunham Massey on Thursday as part of the the BBC's First World War centenary commemorations.
BBC Radio 3’s drivetime programmeIn Tune, which is presented by Sean Rafferty, will broadcast from the Soldiers’ Rec Room of the Stamford Military Hospital, where, between 1917 and 1919, wounded Tommies would sit and play the piano, sing songs and write letters home to loved ones.
Dunham Massey was, until 1976, the family home of the 10th Earl of Stamford who transformed his Georgian House into The Stamford Military Hospital during the 1914-18 War.
The hospital became a sanctuary for 282 soldiers suffering from the horrors of trench warfare.
As part of the anniversary commemorations the National Trust has recreated the hospital using extensive archive material and original artefacts which were kept by the Stamford family.
In Tune will present a live two-hour programme from Dunham reflecting the story of the hospital and the people who were there during 1917-19, through complementary music and conversation.
Among other guests the acclaimed pianist David Owen Norris will perform a selection of First World War music and Sean and his guests will consider the impact that music had on boosting morale, offering solace, and helping recuperation during the war years.
The programme will be broadcast live before an audience on Thursday June 26 between 4.30-6.30pm.
Tickets at £5 are available from the National Trust by going to www.nationaltrust.org.uk/dunham-massey/things-to-see-and-do/events
