COUNCIL chiefs are calling on Trafford residents to join the local authority as it takes part in the UK wide Lights Out event.
it has been organised to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
On August 4 householders are asked to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm
and to leave a single light or candle on as a mark of respect for the sacrifices made and to share an hour of quiet reflection.
The lights out event commemorates the British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey’s famous remark on the outbreak of the First World War.
“The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our life-time."
The event has also attracted support from other organisations including Lancashire Cricket Club and Manchester United, Sale Waterside, the Imperial War Museum North, Marks and Spencer's store in Altrincham and St Peter's Church in Hale.
Executive Councillor for Transformation and Resources Alex Williams reinforced the significance of the Lights Out event.
He said: "We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who fought for our freedom. I would urge residents and local businesses to join the Council and other organisations in remembering and honouring those who gave their lives for us."
St Paul's Church in Sale is holding an a day-long event and in Hale candle posters will be distributed.
The Altrincham branch of Marks and Spencer will be selling special candles to mark the day.
