ON the day after the prestigious Fields Medal was awarded to a woman for the first time in its 76 year history, it was fitting that the Mathematicians, both male and female, were leading the A-level celebrations at Cheadle Hulme School, with 60 per cent of them achieving the top A and A* grades.
Bethany Ellis, who has been a CHS student since the age of four, was delighted to add A*s in Biology and Chemistry to her Mathematics A* and is thrilled to have secured a place to read Medicine at The University of Newcastle.
Students at the leading independent school achieved a 100 per cent pass rate, with almost 50 per cent of them achieving the top A* and A grades, a remarkable result against the background of a predicted national drop in the top grades achieved by students.
The CHS Class of 2014 will be spreading their wings far and wide, with offers accepted at some of the leading universities, to study subjects as varied as Medicine, Veterinary Science, Physics, English Literature and Psychology.
Deputy head boy, Will Hudson, thought there might have been a mistake when he opened his results: “I got 100per cent in English Literature – I wasn’t expecting that.”
The all-rounder also achieved an A in Mathematics and a D1 (higher than A*) in the Cambridge Pre-U Philosophy exam to secure a place to study Philosophy at Bristol.
Oxford bound students include Stephanie Paterson, who will study Law and Oliver Small who will study Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
Musician and Badminton player, Kathryn Reece and fellow student Lucy Skelton, president of the school’s political society, will both study History at St Edmund’s College, Oxford.
“A Level results day is always very emotional,” sayid headteacher, Lucy Pearson,.
“For students and their parents but also for the staff who have nurtured these young people for at least two years and often more.
“I am delighted by the strong performances of the students, which have been achieved alongside a phenomenal contribution to co-curricular and charitable involvement.
“Education is about so much more than academic results, but it is always a proud occasion to see the students fulfil their potential.”
