THE girls and boys at Stockport Grammar School have much to celebrate as they collect their A Level results, with a 100 per cent pass rate and over 96 per cent of results awarded at A* to C, with more than 82 per cent at A* to B.
Thirty pupils have achieved at least three A grades, and eight pupils have at least four As.
These excellent results will see them heading for courses at the country’s most prestigious institutions.
Headmaster, Andrew Chicken, said: “I am delighted for our girls and boys, through hard work and with the support of their parents and teachers they have achieved excellent results.
“They have made an outstanding contribution to wider school life, making them role models for the younger pupils.
"I am sure that with talent and dedication they will continue to achieve highly as they progress to respected universities. I wish them every success.”
We caught up with some of the pupils as they opened their results:
Charlie Saunders is delighted with his hard-earned four A*s in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths, and is looking forward to heading up to St Andrews to study Medicine.
He said: “I have been at SGS for 14 years and it has been the most brilliant experience.
"I’ve made some great friends and the teachers have been just amazing.
"I really enjoyed the music tours and ski trips too.”
Charlie’s mum added: “We’re so proud of him – he has worked extremely hard. We’re going for a celebratory family meal tonight – he deserves it.”
Shareef Sbaiti describes joining SGS in the Sixth Form as 'the best decision of my life'.
Shareef has achieved his two A*s in Biology and Economics and A in Chemistry alongside playing rugby, and a season in which as vice captain of the first XV he is clearly delighted that his team 'won 11 games, and only lost two”.
Scientist Tasmin Ray is off to Oxford to study Chemistry with her three A*s.
“I worked so hard for this – but I also got so much support from my teachers and they really helped me through the tough application process.”
Tasmin is a talented Grade Seven pianist and has always participated in school choirs and musical productions.
"A keen climber, she could often be found suspended from the school climbing wall and she took part in last year’s adventurous climbing trip in the Alps, which she says was “incredible.”
Keen footballer, Ryan Jude gained two A*s and two As and is London bound to study Maths at Imperial College.
As well as working hard at school, Ryan has embraced all that SGS has to offer in terms of extra-curricular activities; playing football for the first team, singing in the chorus and playing in the Big Band as well as taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh and Young Enterprise schemes.
Having also helped to teach Year Six pupils Maths, Ryan has his sights set on a career in stockbroking or banking and says he 'would love to go to New York'.
Ryan’s dad is happy too: “I knew he could do it. He worked really hard – and this is a great school.”
Helen Merrick is celebrating her A* and two As, as she looks forward to embarking on her four year degree course in French and Spanish at Durham University.
Already planning her year abroad, Helen says she would like to spend half of it working in a French school and the other half on an internship in Spain.
Beyond university she has ambitions to travel and to work in translating. Helen used her linguistic skills to take part in the school’s Modern Foreign Languages debating competitions.
She said: “I don’t think I could have enjoyed being at school anywhere else as much as I have enjoyed my time here.”
Flossie Eastwood scored three As in Biology, Chemistry and Maths and is off to study medicine at King’s College London.
She has already undertaken work experience at Wythenshawe Hospital’s general surgery department, where she was able to observe operations, which strengthened her desire to practice medicine.
Flossie gave thanks to the teachers at SGS who have given her tremendous support and expertise in the rigorous application process, and said she would never forget last year’s school trip to Florida.
She said: “I got to do things I would never have done otherwise – such as astronaut training with a real astronaut at NASA!”
Head Girl Jenny Johnson, who is over the moon with her two A*s and two As, is off to Selwyn College, Cambridge to read English.
Jenny has thoroughly enjoyed her time at SGS, having joined the school in Reception.
She has taken her role as Head Girl very seriously and has embraced the additional responsibilities involved, acting as a strong role model to pupils throughout the school.
In addition to her academic success she has also been a key player in the school netball team.
Jed Holloway 'couldn’t be happier' with his three A*s in English Literature, Latin and Maths and A in German.
Taking part in rugby and football at school has been a highlight for multi-talented Jed who also plays the saxophone. Jed’s grades mean that he is off to King’s to study Law.
Nathan Jones is enjoying 'a sense of completion' and the feeling 'that it’s all worth it' with the news that his hard work has paid off with two As in Biology and Chemistry and an A* in Maths.
Nathan is going to study Dentistry at Sheffield. Last summer’s school visit to Rwanda was 'a great life experience' for Nathan who has also recently completed the challenge of achieving his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Hannah Gardiner is very pleased to discover that not only has she gained three A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Maths but that in two of the units she has achieved marks of 100 per cent.
Hannah not only studied hard but has also enjoyed volunteering as a Brownie leader in Glossop for the last four years, and gaining her adult leadership qualification.
Hannah will now be travelling north to Edinburgh to take up her place to study Veterinary Science. Hannah’s mother Maria has been delighted with the 'absolutely excellent' support given to pupils with their preparation for university and with SGS’s 'well rounded' approach to education.
Ben Oldfield is heading to Oxford to study Philosophy and French at St Hilda’s College.
Ben, who gained an A* in English and three As in French, German and Philosophy, said 'the teachers have been great'.
The school orchestras and choirs have been a great source of enjoyment for Ben who is a talented cellist and piano player, having taken up both instruments at the age of seven.
Ben joined SGS from Pownall Green Primary.
Portia Hunt is looking forward to moving to Leeds to study Medicine. 3 A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Maths as well as an A in French have secured her place. Portia says she “felt really proud to be part of such a supportive and inclusive school” which was “very accommodating of everyone”. Drum-kit and percussion in the school orchestras and classical guitar out of school have kept Portia busy alongside hard work for her excellent results.
Josie Napper was nervous about whether she would achieve the grade she needed in Maths, so is delighted with her A*. Combined with 2 As in Biology and Chemistry, Josie has secured her place to study Dentistry at Birmingham. Josie joined SGS as the only pupil from Moss Hey Primary in Bramhall but says she “soon made friends” and describes her fellow pupils as “a really good year group”. A keen netball player, Josie was Vice Captain of the senior team.
Xav Warburton has decided to head abroad, to Monaco, for his university studies. His A* in Art and 2 Bs in Geography and Business Studies have secured his place to study International Business and Management. He says the process of applying was “a challenge” and he is grateful to Head of Sixth Form Mrs White for her help and support.
Matthew Hughes is hoping to combine Chemistry with his already successful cricket career when he takes up his place at Hertford College, Oxford. Matthew, who plays second team cricket for Lancashire and is a member of their Academy, managed to balance frequent practices throughout the winter with his academic work to gain 2 A*s in Chemistry and Maths and an A in Further Maths. He is looking forward to his studies at Oxford and the chance of selection for the University team.
Dan Blears achieved an outstanding 4 A*s across Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics. Biochemistry at Trinity College, Oxford follows for Dan who says his favourite part of school and the aspect he will miss the most has been playing the drums in the school orchestras and big band. He plans to carry on with percussion and his enthusiasm for music alongside his academic studies.
Meredith Ellis is delighted with her 3A*s in Further Maths, Maths and Physics, and her A in German. Meredith is now all set to study Maths at Oriel College, Oxford. A talented French horn player, Meredith was grateful for a tour with the Halle Youth Orchestra to Germany this summer which distracted her from worrying too much while she waited for her results. Orchestras, climbing club and working towards her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award have kept Meredith, who also finds time to coach karate for younger children, busy alongside her school work.
