IT was an exciting morning for Stockport Grammar School’s Fifth Year pupils as they collected their GCSE results. After weeks of waiting, they found that their hard work had brought success.
With 90% of their grades at A* to B, the girls and boys achieved an A* to C pass rate of over 98%. Two-thirds of their grades were at A* and A.
Headmaster Andrew Chicken said: “The girls and boys thoroughly deserve their excellent results. I hope they and their families will enjoy this special day as they celebrate their success. They have a bright future and I’m sure they will make the most of the opportunities which lie ahead.”
We caught up with some of the pupils and their parents as they opened their results.
Whilst 15 year old Simon Fraser from Hayfield is on an orchestral tour of Belgium, his mother collected his results on his behalf and was thrilled to learn that he scored a perfect 12A*s, including Distinction in Further Maths. “Mrs Fraser revealed: “I knew he was capable…. He deserves what he got because he worked very hard.” As Simon prepares to take A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and French, his mother gives the teaching at SGS full praise: “It has been consistently good and extremely supportive over the years.” Accomplished Grade 8 oboeist Simon has a real passion for music, playing with the Halle Youth Orchestra as well as the school orchestras and bands. Simon also sings in the choirs and plays piano.
Ella Burton from Hayfield is delighted with her 8A*s and 2As after working hard for her exams. Ella’s favourite subjects are Biology and Art and she will be taking A Levels in English Literature, Biology, Art and Geography. A conscientious pupil, she is also involved in “a lot” of drama, having performed in the school’s production of Godspell earlier this year. She has just returned from the prestigious RADA Summer School in London, where she stayed in university halls with budding actors from across the globe; learnt acting techniques from the professionals and studied Shakespeare texts in depth, which will come in useful as Ella told us “I will look at them differently now and am looking forward to studying more Shakespeare when I am doing my A Levels.” Ella’s proud friend, Amy told us “Ella is just so enthusiastic about everything she does – she does so well!”
Flo Harrison from Davenport, with 8 A*s and 2 As, said “It could have gone either way!” but had been hopeful that she would do well, especially given the “fantastic support” she gets from her teachers. Flo told us “they treat us as individuals and we get lots of one-on-one time to help us improve and understand the subjects better.” As well as working hard, Flo is a regular at Chess Club and plays hockey for the school, whilst also being a member of the school council, which she says “has been really interesting, and good to be involved in decision-making at school.” Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Philosophy are Flo’s chosen A Levels when she returns to school in September.
Alfie Hall from Didsbury put in the hard work to obtain 7A*s, 2As and 2Bs in a range of subjects including Greek which he studied as an extra-curricular subject after school once a week. He paid tribute to some “inspirational and incredible” teaching and is looking forward to studying Classics, History, Geography and Psychology at A Level, and potentially going on to pursue a degree in International Relations or History. Having been involved in Model United Nations at school, Alfie says it has given him “a chance to see how you could help change the world.”
Georgie Blears from Poynton broke the news of her fantastic 10 A*s and 1 A live on air on Key 103. Excited and thrilled, Georgie said “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for SGS!” A Levels in Maths, Physics, Philosophy and English are next for Georgie.
Camilla Barnes from Bramhall is heading off to Leeds Festival along with a large number of her classmates to celebrate their successes. With 7A*s and 3 As, she said: “I didn’t expect it! I opened the envelope and was looking for the Bs, but there weren’t any!” Camilla is excited to join the Sixth Form with her friends, and will be studying Maths, Economics, Geography and Classics. She has enjoyed playing hockey for the school’s first team and regularly helps out in the school library. Whilst Mrs Barnes told us her daughter has “worked steadily”, Camilla spoke of the tremendous support she has received from her teachers and how many go “above and beyond” to help the pupils.
Amy Bracegirdle from Wilmslow is grateful for the support she has received, helping her to achieve 2A*s, 6As, B, C. All set to study Maths, Economics, Psychology and Geography at A Level, Amy already has ambitions to pursue a career in child psychology.
Jordon Kong from Heaton Mersey is “feeling a lot happier now I have got my results” after weeks of waiting for the news he had gained 10 A*s and an A, including an A* with Distinction in Further Maths. A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and German are next for Jordon who plans to study Medicine. A member of the school football team, Jordon is looking forward to continuing with his sport in the Sixth Form. As Olivia Marsden from Chisworth celebrated her 9A*s and an A, her mum beamed: “We’re ecstatic! She has worked so hard…. I’m so proud.” Sporty Olivia enjoys netball and swimming, and has recently attended a swimming teaching course. As she looks forward to joining the Sixth Form where she will take A Levels in German, Art, Psychology and Biology, Olivia is especially excited about a month-long school trip to Bolivia and Peru next summer for which she and her friends are busy raising funds through bake sales, washing cars and various summer jobs. Olivia has her sights set on a career “working with people – perhaps psychology or counselling.”
“The whole school feel of everyone coming together to help you” is a highlight of SGS for Amy Suddards from Disley who joined at aged four in Reception. Mum Andrea is “absolutely delighted and so proud” with her results of 11 A* including an A* with Distinction in Further Maths. Amy has not only worked hard but also found time for netball, chemistry clubs, singing in Chorus and piano lessons at school. A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics will follow for Amy who would like to continue with the study of Natural Sciences and Physics at university.
Katie Suttle from Mellor is “delighted” with her 3 A*s and 7 As and plans to do English Literature, Psychology, History and Classics for A Level. Katie enjoys taking part in the school House events and playing netball.
For Anna Dowson from Heaton Moor “friends are the best thing” about school. With her 9 A*s and an A, Anna is perfectly set for her A Level choice of Philosophy, Art, Biology and English. Anna is working towards her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award having already gained her Bronze.
Sophia Swindlehurst from Heaton Moor hopes to study Physics and Philosophy at university, following A Levels in Physics, Philosophy, Maths and Classics. Her 8 A*s, A and a B will prepare her well for this challenging combination. Friends are a highlight of school for Sophia who describes SGS as “a really nice place to study”. Having just finished her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award she is looking forward to a break from camping before deciding whether to tackle the Gold award.
Charles Longson from Hazel Grove is “really happy” with his 9 A*s and 2 As and, with his sights set on a career in Medicine, plans to study Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths at A Level. Charles enjoys rugby and hopes to carry on playing in the Sixth Form.
Keen netball player Stephanie Hughes from Cheadle Hulme says she “enjoys everything” about school and is looking forward to Sixth Form when she will study Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Business Studies. Grades of 5 A*s, 5 As and a B have prepared Stephanie well although she says it’s “too early to know” what will come next.
Becky Chapman from Disley is “so happy” and “never thought she’d get them” when she saw her grades of 5 A*s and 5 As. Athletics and netball are highlights of school for Becky who enjoys the “family feel” of SGS and is considering which A Level to take alongside Geography, Spanish and Philosophy. With university still two years away, Law may possibly be Becky’s future course.
Cassie Hotchkies from Stockport combined the hard work needed to get 9 A*s and 2As, including A* with Distinction in Further Maths, with hockey, singing in Chorus and taking part in the Chemistry CREST award in which she got a silver. Cassie who says she “was really scared but happy now” plans to take A Levels in Maths, English Literature, Physics and Chemistry.
With 8 A*s and an A, Laura Cooper from Offerton is thinking about the combination of A Levels which will help her towards her ambition of studying Biology or Biology and Geology at university. Laura has enjoyed volunteering at Manchester Museum throughout the summer break, with the opportunity to demonstrate their archives to enthusiastic young visitors. Laura writes a zoology blog and has been researching the extinct ancestors and relatives of elephants for a science writing competition as well as helping the Cheshire Bat Group with their work.
