HORSE omnibus services and canal passenger boats were serving Altrincham by the early 1840s, and by the end of that decade the railway came to town.
Kelly's Directory of Cheshire in 1864 says the horse-drawn omnibus service ran from Bowdon Station to Hale on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 8am.
The railway arrived in Altrincham 19 years after the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The town's station was on a branch line from the main link between London Road Station (now Piccadilly) and Ordsall Lane in Salford.
The first train ran on the branch line at noon on Whit Monday, May 28, 1849, carrying dignitaries and the Stretford Temperance Band!
On July 20, the first public train left Altrincham, with the first bought by a boy called Isaac Warburton, who lived in Langham Road, Bowdon.
