TO celebrate UK Parliament week last month, we invited Sir Graham Brady, MP for Altrincham and Sale West, to Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh Sale Shakha held every Sunday in Ashton-on-Mersey school on November 18.
The program started with a talk on Parliament — a temple of democracy, followed by a video on the UK parliament system.
Sir Graham then shared his experience and views on varied topics including Brexit and finally a member of the UK youth parliament talked about public engagement and opportunities.
Four teenagers then presented their 10-point manifesto, on their thoughts and plans to serve the local community better, if elected.
A mock election was held with the winner declared after counting of the votes.
The children enjoyed quizzing their MP, some of the questions being:
1 Why do we need laws?
2 Has anyone broken the law within the parliament?
3 How many laws / Lords are there in the UK?
4 Is the parliament a safe working place?
This exercise has helped our next generation have a better understanding of the processes of the Parliament, consider it as a profession with the ethos of Sewa and sow the seeds of future leaders. #UKPW18
