THIS picture was taken at Dutton’s Pond, Flixton, of a checkered lily (Fritillaria Meleagris), by Alan Walker, of Davyhulme.
Alan says the checkered lily is also known as Snakes Head Fritillary, Chess Flower, Frog Cup and other names as well.
In Croatia it is known as Kockavica. The daffodil just adds a little extra.
The flower has a chequered pattern in purple and is sometimes white in colour as can be seen in the picture. The plant flowers from March to May and grows to 15-40cms tall. It grows in damp conditions which is ideal at Dutton’s Pond area.
