A BAR in Urmston is set to unveil a painting of a Mancunian music legend close to its owner's heart.
'SUP, which opened on Flixton Road last month, is unveiling a portrait of Denise Johnson later today.
Owner John Locke was a friend of the vocalist, who worked with bands like New Order, Primal Scream and Flixton's own A Certain Ratio over the decades.
Since she died aged 56 in July of last year, he has wanted to find a way to celebrate her life and talent.
He said: "Denise was lauded and applauded worldwide for her talent and for her contribution to Manchester’s rich musical heritage.
"Also for being a strong, individual woman and a fiercely loyal, loved and valued inspiration to young, aspiring musicians and to her fans, friends and family.
"This portrait is to remember and celebrate her life, talent and incredible smile, which could light up the darkest rooms and stages."
Finding an artist was a simple process for John, who once commissioned a painting of another Mancunian music legend, The Fall's late frontman Mark E Smith, for former bar The Northern in Manchester's Northern Quarter.
He approached the same artist, Simon Mound, asking him to create the portrait from a photograph which emerged around the anniversary of Johnson's death.
Mound has several paintings of musicians from Manchester and elsewhere in his portfolio, some of which were launched into space earlier in the year.
According to John, he took up the new commission with no hesitation.
The portrait is set to be unveiled at an event between 6.30pm and 9.30pm, with some of Johnson's family, friends and former bandmates in attendance.
A limited number of prints signed by Mound are available on the evening, with all profits going to Forever Manchester – a community activity charity.
