AN heroic Flixton resident was quick to take action when she saw a pensioner slumped over his steering wheel and apparently unconscious.

Mum of two Beverley Lynch, 40, of Haslemere Road, was driving along Woodsend Road in Davyhulme on Tuesday, January 22,at 1.30pm when she saw the man had pulled over to the side of the road and was seemingly collapsed at his steering wheel.

Beverley hastily doubled back at Woodsend Circle and went to see if she could help the unconscious driver.

She said: "I tapped on the car window but there was no response so I opened the door and the man fell on me gasping for breath.

"I was really scared but immediately called for an ambulance, just hoping he would be ok. I nudged his foot off the accelerator as the engine was revving and took the keys out of the ignition."

Beverley reclined the driver's seat and loosened the man's collar while she told him not to worry and that she would not leave him.

She added: "At first I was sitting on the road with a lot of oncoming traffic, none of which stopped or came to see if they could help. After I lowered the seat I jumped in the car's passenger seat and just talked to him. I could see in his eyes he was frightened, luckily the ambulance was very quick to arrive."

The driver, who North West Ambulance Service confirmed was 65-years-old, was taken to Trafford General Hospital where a medical team was waiting on his arrival.

The driver's son, who did not want himself or his father to be named, said: "He seems ok. It will be up to the doctors to tell us how he is. We give our thanks to Beverley, she seems like a nice lady. If it wasn't for her anything could have happened."
