SOCIAL services chiefs are to close a day centre for people with learning difficulties in Altrincham and replace it with a new one in Timperley.
The 56 people who attend Albert Place day centre will be moved to refurbished premises in the soon-to-be opened Broomwood Centre.
The change will provide the 56 service users with a purpose-built base, claims executive director of community services and social care, Mike Cooney.
The move is part of a 'Pathways' project to modernise day support services for people with learning disabilities.
Mr Cooney said an important element of this change has been the involvement of service users, their families and carers. The consultation has been provided through a series of forums and groups set up especially to share information and to receive feedback as the development progressed.
"From stakeholder days, individual reviews, project groups and the involvement of service users, advocates and other interested parties and carers, every effort has been taken throughout this process of change and improvement to make sure that people are not just informed but heavily involved and have ample opportunities to help influence and shape decisions."
He added: "An important part of the ongoing consultation regarding these changes has been the involvement of staff throughout the process. They have all been kept informed of the plans, been involved in offering support and assistance to answer service user questions and continue to provide the highest standard of service.
"This move is not about saving money or cutting jobs, it is about improving the wellbeing of vulnerable people by providing day support services and providing respite to their carers. Once these services are transferred to Broomwood, we expect people will benefit from being in a much more comfortable, appropriate environment where they receive even better quality day support."
He pointed out there is no financial saving to the council as a result of the move, which is expected to take place in April. No decision has been taken as to how the vacated Albert Place building will be used in the future.
*David Hanley from Trafford social services will explain the move at Altrincham South neighbourhood forum, at 6pm on January 29 at Altrincham Town Hall. Anyone who cannot get there or would like some support should 'phone Pat Morris on 0161 928 9701 or Judie Collins on 0161 941 3177.
