A SWAN is loving its new life in a nature reserve after it was caught in a canal overflow in Altrincham.
The bird was rescued from Bridgewater Canal by Stephen Wickham, an animal rescue officer for the RSPCA, after his partner spotted posts about its plight on social media.
On Saturday, February 26, Stephen was lowered into the canal overflow off Deansgate Lane with the aid of firefighters from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
He used a pole to reach the swan, before wading through waist-high water with it wriggling in his arms to take it to the canalside.
Stephen, who is trained in Swiftwater Rescue Techniques, said: "The water was high because of the recent storms and it wasn't easy to get to him. He kept swimming away from me after I got in."
“The water was waist-high and it was full of rubbish. But we got him out and he was fine."
According to the RSPCA, the bird might have been chased off Bridgewater Canal by rivals, before it ran into difficulties in an attempt to return to the water.
Stephen anticipates more of the same in the breeding season as swans compete for their territory, although it will not be a problem for this bird, which has been moved to a nearby nature reserve.
He said: "Now we have relocated him to a pool at a nature reserve, close to where he was found, where there are only females."
People who come across birds and other wildlife in difficulties are advised to take care and to call for help from the RSPCA.
