The Met Office has issued a first ever red warning for extreme temperatures with the thermometer set to touch 35°C in Trafford.

The weather service had issued an amber warning for Sunday, but it has extended and then upgraded it for Monday and Tuesday.

According to the Met Office, a red warning means a risk to all people, not limited to vulnerable people.

There is also a risk of serious incidents as some take to the coast, lakes and other large bodies of water.

Delays are anticipated on the roads and the railways, with Transport for Greater Manchester issuing a warning to travel only if necessary.

The failure of infrastructure could lead to the loss of services such as electricity supply and phone signal.

Met Office chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: "Exceptional, perhaps record-breaking temperatures are likely early next week, widely across the red warning area on Monday, and focused a little more east and north on Tuesday.

"Currently there is a 50 per cent chance we'll see temperatures top 40°C and 80 per cent we'll see a new maximum temperature reached.

“Nights are likely to be exceptionally warm, especially in urban areas. This is likely to lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

"Therefore, it's important people plan for the heat and consider changing their routines. This level of heat can have adverse health effects."
