A decision on Stretford's cycle lanes is on hold until after another consultation, a councillor on Trafford Council's executive has revealed.
The cycle lanes were installed in the form of traffic cones on Bridgewater Way, Chester Road and Edge Lane during lockdown in 2020.
An initial consultation on the traffic cones, which were installed to promote active travel and social distancing, closed at the end of last year after it received around 16,000 responses.
It came after residents complained of issues such as congestion and pollution, and a petition called 'No Cones on Chester Road' attracted thousands of signatures.
Earlier in 2022, the council said it still needed time to trawl through all of the responses, with the results set to be announced some time after the local elections.
Leader Cllr Andrew Western said: "We understand that this is an important issue, and that the delay is frustrating both for ourselves as a council and for residents across the borough.
"This is an important decision. More cars are now back on the roads and we have to assess how we manage this increased traffic while also supporting active travel.
"I would like to again thank everyone for taking part in the consultation and look forward to reporting back to the council, businesses and residents with the results."
But this week Cllr Aidan Williams, executive member for climate change and transport strategy, said another consultation is on its way.
After someone asked about the cycle lanes on Twitter, Cllr Williams said: "Hi, I share in the frustration about the pace of this work.
"The first round of consultation produced around 16,000 bits of feedback. The second round of consultation should start this autumn.
"Aim is to begin work to remove cones and replace with more suitable scheme starting late 2022."
In response to Cllr Williams's tweet, creator of the 'No Cones on Chester Road' petition and Gorse Hill resident Tracey Haworth slammed the council for the delays.
Ms Haworth was a Conservative Group candidate for Davyhulme West in the local elections, but lost out to Cllr Graham Whitham.
She said: "It’s incredible, two years after the ‘temporary cones’ were placed on the A56, they still remain and now we're told there'll be another consultation to determine their fate. How many more consultations are Trafford Labour planning after the next one until they get the result they want?
"The cone chaos shows the incompetence of Trafford Labour who, eight months after the first consultation closed, are still seemingly unable to count up the ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘maybe’ consultation votes and now are planning to prolong the agony even longer for Stretford residents and visitors to the area."
