After the announcement of Her Majesty The Queen's death by Buckingham Palace, The Messenger has taken a look at the times she came to Trafford in her 70-year reign.

The monarch made four trips to the region, one of them as recent as last year.

The first of these trips was on the Silver Jubilee, when The Queen attended a Royal Garden Party at Longford Park in Stretford.

There were thousands of guests at the event and thousands of residents lined the streets for a procession through the town centre.

An excerpt from the Stretford and Urmston Journal reads: "More than 75,000 people from all over Greater Manchester lined The Queen’s route in Chester Road and Edge Lane, many of them keeping up a six-hour vigil... decked in their red, white and blue, many surged behind the Rolls [Royce] and followed it to the gates of Longford Park.

"The Queen and Prince Philip stepped out of the car to be greeted on the steps of Longford Hall by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Sir William Downward.

"The Mayor of Trafford’s four-year-old daughter Susannah then presented The Queen with a hand spray of flowers, before they went inside to sign the visitors' books.

"The royal couple stepped out into the warm sunshine again to be met by the warm applause of their guests."

In 1986, the monarch came to open GMP's Communications and Computer Centre at Chester House.

Chester House was also the force's headquarters until it moved to Newton Heath around 10 years ago.

In 1994, The Queen was the first person to walk across Centenary Bridge, which connects Salford to Trafford, 100 years after Queen Victoria opened the ship canal.

She opened the bridge on the Salford side, then went to the Trafford side where she was met by the then Mayor, Cllr Ken Rogers.

Then, just last year, the monarch returned to Trafford Park for the last of these trips to take a tour of the set of Coronation Street.

After a welcome from the then Mayor, Cllr Laurence Walsh, she chatted to the cast and walked the cobbles to mark the 60th anniversary of the popular programme.
