A man left with life-threatening injuries after an assault in the Old Trafford area has died, police said.

The man, who has been named as Headley Barry Thomas, or Barry, was taken to hospital on the afternoon of September 12 after reports of concern for someone's welfare at Penn Park.

At the time, police said he had life-threatening injuries, but on October 4 it was revealed he has died.

As a part of what is now a murder investigation, a man and a woman have been arrested then bailed.

Another man was also arrested, but released with no action to be taken against him.

In an appeal for information, Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Davies, of GMP's Major Incident Team, said detectives are not sure if the assault was at Penn Park or another location in the Old Trafford area.

DCI Davies said detectives want to speak in particular to an Asian woman in her 50s or 60s, who is thought to have been the one to discover Barry.

He explained: "Since September, we have been working tirelessly to find the person or persons responsible for this attack, which has tragically resulted in a much-loved man losing his life.

"However, we still need more information to establish exactly what happened on the day Barry was attacked. I’d urge anyone with information, or anyone who may have seen Barry in the hours leading up to the attack, to please get in touch with us as soon as possible, as your information may just help us to solve this investigation and to get justice for Barry and for his family."

In a statement, the family said: "Our hearts are broken, our world has been altered forever. Forever loved by his family, his children, and his friends.

“Our brother was prideful, protective, funny, loyal and a caring man with a huge heart to match and we are saddened by this news. We as a family are searching for answers to this senseless act and to bring closure to a life that's lost."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, or to use an online portal.
