A driver fled from the scene after a crash on the M6 outside Trafford, Cheshire Police said.

The emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway near to Junction 20 for Lymm at around 12.30am on Tuesday.

They attended the scene of a crash, which involved two Peugeots and a Volkswagen Scirocco, and closed the M6 for several hours.

The driver of one Peugeot, a man in his 40s from St Helens, was taken to Salford Royal with serious injuries.

While the driver of another Peugeot and their passenger, a man and a woman in their 20s, received no injuries.

However, according to Cheshire Police, the driver of the Volkswagen Scirocco fled from the scene on foot.

A man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injuries by dangerous driving, but the force has still appealed to the public for footage or information of the incident.
