National Highways warned drivers of two months of disruption due to work on the M60 in Trafford.
The motorway is set to be resurfaced between the exits for the A56 and the A6144 starting on May 30.
The work is set to be completed overnight with lane closures although full closures are a possibility if necessary to end on time, according to National Highways.
It is set to be completed before the end of July.
A spokesperson said: "If full closures are required, a fully-signed diversion will be in place, which will be agreed in advance with the police and local authority."
Drivers are advised to allow additional time for travel and to check on the traffic before their departure.
