An ex-GMP Trafford cadet leader who committed sexual assault on the teenagers for whom he was responsible is to spend five years in prison.

Adnan Ali, from Old Trafford, was convicted of five counts of sexual assault and 15 counts of misconduct in a public office after a trial in April.

According to GMP, all of the convictions related to incidents over the course of around three years from 2015, and involved boys and girls involved in the cadets.

Ali was arrested and was suspended around five years ago and the seizure of his devices revealed thousands of texts to his victims.

After a tribunal he was dismissed by Chief Constable Stephen Watson and he was added to the barred list of the College of Policing.

On Friday, he was sentenced to five years in prison.

Chief Superintendent Mike Allen, of the GMP Professional Standards Branch, said: "At a time when policing is subject to such scrutiny, particularly in relation to sexual misconduct and abuse of position, Ali’s behaviour will, understandably, damage confidence and trust in the force.

"However, the public should be reassured by the action taken by GMP, the IOPC [Independent Office for Police Conduct] and the CPS [Crown Prosecution Service] to secure his arrest, prosecution, suspension and dismissal."

Kate Green, the Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester, is applying to the Home Office for Ali to lose his pension.

Ms Green said: "This is an appalling and sickening case and I want to commend the victims and witnesses for their bravery in coming forward so justice can be done.

"The police are there to keep the rest of us safe but instead of being a role model, Ali abused his position to prey on vulnerable young cadets who simply wanted to learn so they themselves could one day protect the public.

"Allowing him to collect a pension after committing these offences would be an insult to his victims.

"I support GMP’s proposals and I will be submitting an application to the Home Office for Ali to be ordered to forfeit his pension."
