A councillor is to stand down from her position on Trafford Council after "a change in priorities".

Adele New was elected as a member for Bucklow St Martins Ward for the first time in 2018.

Recently, Cllr New was re-elected as a member for the ward, an area covering Carrington and Partington and including part of Sale. She received the most votes out of her and colleagues Aidan Williams and James Wright, allowing her a four-year term until re-election.

But in a post on social media this week she said she is to stand down from her role on Trafford Council after "a change in priorities" and with immediate effect.

Cllr New said: "After much deliberation I made the decision to stand down as a councillor yesterday (September 20). My resignation is with immediate effect.

"Over the summer months my priorities have changed and I have enjoyed time I have spent with my family on evenings and weekends instead of rushing off to meetings, casework, campaigning, community work and other demands upon my time in addition to working."

Council leader Tom Ross thanked Cllr New on behalf of the leading Labour Group.

Cllr Ross said: "Adele should be proud of her time spent in public service. She has been a force for change during her time representing the residents of Bucklow St Martins Ward and she will be missed by both friends and colleagues.

"Adele was a strong advocate for children and young people and a respected stalwart of her community.

"All Labour colleagues would like to thank Adele for her exceptional and unwavering commitment in her role as a councillor.

"We will all miss her and we wish her all the best for the future."

Bucklow St Martins Ward is a safe seat for the Labour Group since its creation in 2004.

A spokesperson for the council said there is to be a by-election in the coming weeks.
