Retailers on our high streets have been suffering from the cost of living crisis, with shoppers paying more for less – according to the Office for National Statistics, sale prices are up 17% in 2023, but the volume of the sales has fallen 3%.

Christmas is a key season for businesses, particularly local retailers. In a bid to boost footfall and sales, Manchester’s Night Time Economy Advisor, Sacha Lord, has a plan. Announced during the Labour Party Conference, Lord aims to have his ideas picked up by the government and incorporated into a high street revival plan.

The 5 point plan outlines the need for the reinstation of the 12.5% VAT rate for the hospitality industry, which currently rests at 20%, as well as a review of outdated business rates, centralised licensing laws, overtly high energy prices and a stronger incentive for entry into the sector though a new Hospitality T-Level.

Locally though, Lord has also announced the “Best in the Borough” campaign, which aims to showcase 10 local independent businesses on one of Manchester's biggest billboards. The scheme relies on direct public interaction, with people able to nominate and vote for shops on Lord’s social media pages. Some businesses have already been chosen, such as Stockport’s Bask restaurant, and the Partisan Collective, an art social space situated in Salford.

This week, Lord embarks on his 3rd week of the campaign, as he looks for two businesses from the boroughs of Trafford and Oldham. It is hoped that, with the looming threat of a January slump in sales, the Christmas campaign will help businesses across Greater Manchester stay afloat.
