Greene King pubs across Trafford are taking part in a scheme that sees people drop off their plastic sweet containers in a bid to save the environment and raise money for charity.
The ‘Tub2Pub’ scheme begins on January 1 and will run until February 11.
More than 5,000kg of plastic, almost 50,000 tubs were collected through Tub2Pub over the past two years. The money raised for Greene King's charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support, totalled £11,308.
Currently, there are three million people living with cancer in the UK, with this statistic estimated to raise to four million by 2030. The charity provides physical, emotional and financial support to cancer patients.
Greene King pubs will be accepting confectionary tubs, biscuit tubs and cracker tubs to recycle.
Drop off points available locally include:
The Matchstick Man - Urmston
Coppice Wood Farm - Urmston
Royal Oak - Chorlton
Studies suggest that only nine per cent of plastic waste is recycled. The majority is shipped abroad. Britain is also guilty of contributing to littering the sea, dumping 1.7 billion tonnes in the oceans annually.
The plastic will be taken to a reprocessing centre where it will be sold to plastic manufacturers, giving the plastic a new life instead of rotting in landfill.
All money will be given to Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity which is 98 per cent funded by donations.
