A man has been charged with the murder of an Oldham mum who was stabbed to death while taking her five-month-old baby for a stroll.

Detectives investigating the death of Kulsuma Akter in Bradford city centre on Saturday (April 6) have charged Habibur Masum with her murder.

The 25-year-old, currently of Leamington Avenue in Burnley, was charged last night (April 10) with murder and possession of a bladed article.

He has been remanded into custody to appear at Bradford Magistrates Court today (Thursday, 11 April).

On Saturday afternoon, Kulsuma Akter was fatally stabbed in the neck while pushing her baby in a pram through the Westgate area of Bradford city centre.

The 27-year-old was pushing her baby in a pram when the attack took place at 3.20pm in Westgate at the junction with Drewton Road.

Ms Akter was fatally stabbed in the neck and was taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds.

A 23-year-old man was also arrested, in Cheshire on Monday on suspicion of assisting an offender, and has been released on bail.

Four other men were arrested in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire - where Masum himself was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 170 miles away from the incident after a four-day hunt.

The men aged 23, 26, 28, and 29, from the West Midlands area, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and drug offences, and are all currently in custody.

Ms Akter's cousin Aftab Miah has told the BBC that her mother, who lives in Bangladesh, has been "constantly crying".

He said: “She was very caring, humble, she had (a) good personality. She used to make people laugh. She was a wonderful lady.

“Her mum in Bangladesh, she’s constantly crying. I spoke to (her) a lot yesterday, and she never stopped crying and all the time mentioning her name.”

While Mr Miah also told the broadcaster that Ms Akter moved to Oldham two years ago with her husband.

Speaking previously, Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Enquiry Team, added: “This is a tragic incident in which a mother has lost her life in the most horrific of circumstances."
