Sale's WHSmith announced it is closing within weeks at Stanley Square but film-lovers are likely to love what is coming in its place.

The retailer is closing on September 14 but a cinema called The Northern Light is coming to the same site at the start of next year.

Manero Cinemas, the independent cinema chain behind The Northern Light, said it is the sixth site in a portfolio including other sites in the North West such as The Rex in Wilmslow, Cheshire, and The Savoy in Heaton Moor, Stockport.

There will be three screens with armchairs, sofas, laser projectors and surround sound to create an exceptional experience for film-lovers enjoying anything from Hollywood Blockbusters to foreign-language films and independent films.

This is in addition to a bar serving beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, as well as the all-important popcorn and other snacks.

Tony Mundin, the managing director of Manero Cinemas, said: "We are thrilled to bring an affordable, luxury experience to Sale for everyone to enjoy a trip to the cinema.

"We will prioritise comfort to ensure everyone has a great time."

It is around 40 years since the closure of the Tatton Cinema, previously the Pyramid Cinema, with the Grade-II listed site still in pride of place on Washway Road.

The Northern Light will be the only cinema in the town as the other cinemas available to its residents are either in Altrincham, the city centre or the Trafford Centre.

Michael Brown, the managing director of Altered Space, said: "We are delighted to welcome The Northern Light to Stanley Square. The venue will be an excellent addition increasing the footfall throughout the day and into the evening.

"The venue will complement our exciting line-up of food and beverage businesses."

WHSmith is closing on September 14 and The Northern Light is coming to the same site at the start of next year. It will be open every day of the year excluding Christmas.
