Two of Trafford's Labour Party MPs received roles in Sir Keir Starmer's administration after their re-election in last week's General Election.

Andrew Western and Mike Kane are to be ministers in the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Transport respectively.

Mr Western, the MP for Stretford and Urmston, is to be a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State under the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liz Kendall.

In the General Election he held onto the seat he has held since 2022 by a margin of more than 16,000 votes.

In a post on social media, Mr Western said: "It is an honour to be asked to serve as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Work and Pensions.

"I am looking forward to working with Liz Kendall and the team to deliver on the government's priorities."

While Mr Kane, the MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East, is to be a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State under the Secretary of State for Transport, Louise Haigh.

In the General Election he held onto the seat he has held since 2014 by a margin of more than 14,000 votes.

In a post on social media, Mr Kane said: "It is a huge privilege to be asked by the Prime Minister to serve as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Transport.

"It is an honour to serve alongside Louise Haigh, Peter Hendy [Minister of State], Lilian Greenwood and Simon Lightwood [Parliamentary Under-Secretaries of State] in government."

Currently there is no role for Connor Rand, the first Labour MP for Altrincham and Sale West, although this is not unusual for a first-time MP.

Mr Rand's win by a margin of more than 4,000 votes stood out in the area where the last non-Conservative MP was more than 100 years ago.

A handful of first-time MPs received roles in Sir Keir Starmer's administration but, at least for the moment, the former party organiser and senior researcher for the Usdaw Union is not among them.
