Trafford Council is adding cameras to fly-tipping hotspots across the area in an attempt to catch fly-tippers in the act.

The announcement comes after the removal of 100 tonnes of rubbish from the area in the first four months of this year.

The council is adding cameras to fly-tipping hotspots which will be in action around the clock to allow anyone caught on camera to be prosecuted. If prosecuted the punishment for fly-tippers is up to a £50,000 fine or one year in prison at magistrates' court and up to an unlimited fine or five years in prison at Crown Court.

It is understood two cases are already awaiting prosecution and a number of other cases are under investigation.

Stephen Adshead, the council's executive member for environmental services, said: "Our environmental improvement team works week in week out in a bid to eradicate fly-tipping in Trafford.

"I am delighted we invested in a camera system to catch fly-tippers in action.

"If you fly-tip in our borough there is a chance we will be recording you. We will not tolerate crimes of this nature in our beautiful borough and we will come after you if you are caught fly-tipping in our communities."

The council said One Trafford, the collaboration between the local authority and Amey PLC, removed 100 tonnes of rubbish from the area in the first four months of this year, a lot of which was recyclable or resellable.
