Dozens of sixth formers from Trafford at Manchester High School for Girls are celebrating their outstanding A-level grades which have secured their places in some of the UK's best universities.

Lara and Jess, from Altrincham, and Natalie from Old Trafford, all achieved fantastic grades and are off to their first-choice universities.

Jess is off to the Royal Veterinary College in London after securing an A* and 2As while Lara is off to Durham to study English literature after securing three A*s.

Meanwhile, Natalie, a bursary recipient from a Ukrainian family, is preparing for student life in Durham to study history after achieving 2As and an A*.

She said: “I’m so relieved and so happy, I can’t event put it into words.

"My best memories from MHSG has got to be being Head Girl, it’s been so important in my growth.

"Without question, MHSG helped me to get to where I am today.”

A total of 86 per cent of all grades achieved by MHSG students were the 'gold standard' of A*-B, while 29 per cent of all grades were the highest possible, A*.

Ten MHSG students achieved grade A*s across all of their subjects and more than a third of the year group achieved A*/A across all of their A-levels.

The high results mean students are off to some of the highest-ranked UK universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL, St Andrews, Durham and Warwick.

All of the school’s students who had been offered places at Oxbridge also secured their places this year while others are taking up prestigious degree apprenticeship places at four big companies.

Headmistress Helen Jeys said: “I am exceptionally proud of our senior Sixth students.

"Their results are testament to their hard work and the support of our brilliant team of teachers and support staff.

“Not only are the results excellent but it is wonderful to see our students going on to study such a huge array of courses at university: from maths, operational research, statistics and economics; dentistry; medicine and veterinary science to philosophy and French; archaeology; modern foreign languages and philosophy.

"These courses mirror the opportunities the students take advantage of during their time in school and we are excited to see how they enjoy university and await the success they will, undoubtedly, go on to achieve.”

She continued: "With women continuing to be under-represented in STEM-related careers, we are also delighted that 100 per cent of all grades awarded in subjects such as computer science and physics were A*-B.

"This bodes well for the future; I am sure that we will see our students go on to be the agents of change that they have been since MHSG was founded 150 years ago.

“Furthermore, the fact that 10 departments across a range of subject areas are celebrating 100 per cent A*-B grades this year proves that our students succeed in all areas, from the creative subjects of drama, music, fine art and graphics to English language, geography and classical civilisation.

“We are exceptionally proud of our students and wish each of them every success for the next stage of their exciting, educational journeys.”

There are a limited number of places in the Sixth Form at Manchester High School for Girls for September 2024.

Mrs Jeys added: "Every year at Manchester High we speak to girls with a fantastic set of GCSE results, who want to see what our high-performing Sixth Form can offer them.

"We will be available on GCSE results day so that girls can explore their options.”
