A blind student and keen athlete from Trafford who once caught the eye of King Charles is celebrating her top A-level results and university placement.

Freya Gavin has excelled in her studies at the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) since she joined in 2021.

The college said the youngster combined her "academic rigour" with a vibrant and active college life as, alongside her studies, she honed her skills in assistive technology, Braille, independent living and mobility.

Freya is also a talented athlete and a key member of the RNC Academy's goalball team, which clinched a gold at the Goalball UK Intermediate Finals in Sheffield earlier this year.

Her sporting prowess even impressed King Charles, the college's patron, when she showcased her blind football skills during a royal visit in 2022.

She also took on an ambitious EPC project where she participated in the Manchester Marathon, finishing in an impressive time of 5.09.31 and fundraising more than £3,000 for RCN, which the college said shows her "exceptional initiative and determination".

Beyond the sports field, the pupil also had the chance to demonstrate her culinary talents in a college bake-off competition, as judged by renowned Bake-Off contestant, Saku Chandrasekera.

Freya is now setting off to study physiotherapy at the University of Salford having secured a set of impressive qualifications under her belt.

This includes A-level psychology (C), AS sociology (B), BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sporting Excellence and Performance (D*), BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sporting Excellence and Performance (D*D*), BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Contracted Braille (Pass), Diploma in Sports Massage (Pass), Dipoma in Holistic Massage (Pass), Certificate in On Site Massage (Pass), A Level Biology (D) and OCR Level 3 EPQ (A).

She has also been offered a part-time job as a massage therapist at a local physio and rehabilitation clinic which she will do alongside her studies.

Freya said: "RNC has given me the skills to gain employment and to go to university and start a career in which I’m really passionate about.

"I’m really pleased with my results and very grateful to RNC."
