Thunderstorms and heavy showers may cause sudden flooding tomorrow - as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning.

The thunderstorm warning is in effect from 4am to 9pm on Sunday, September 1.

The North, South, the Midlands and Yorkshire may be affected.

There is a slight chance of flooding, with 30 to 40 mm of rain projected to fall in less than an hour in affected areas.

Storms could see the risk of 'spray and sudden flooding' causing potential road closures driving and motorists have been told to check travel information before travelling.

Possible flooding and lightning strikes may cause train and bus service cancellations.

There is a slight chance of power cuts and lost services to homes and businesses.

Homes and businesses in areas with high rain fall may be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "We're expecting a plume of showers moving erratically northwards through the course of Sunday.

"Some could be heavy and thundery, but not everywhere is going to see these showers.

"Where they do occur there is the potential of heavy rain for a period."

The Met Office has forecast a few showers and isolated thunderstorms tonight (August 31) across parts of southern England, with an increasing risk of more active heavy showers and thunderstorms moving north through the afternoon and into the early evening on Sunday.

The Met Office has recommended people to check if their property is at risk of flooding.

To prepare for a flood, they have advised:

  1. Check the flood advice in your area
  2. Charge mobile phone devices
  3. Park your car outside the flood zone
  4. Prepare a flood kit to help them cope in the event of flooding
  5. Store valuables up high, including electrical devices, important documents and furniture
  6. Turn off gas water and electricity supplies
