A Stretford sushi restaurant is open in the town centre after moving more than 20 miles down the motorway.

Nishi Sushi opened on Barton Road, above BrewChimp, last week after the move from Chorley, Lancashire.

Whakil Mahmud, the Portuguese chef-patron, was at the old location for around three years attracting rave reviews on social media and on sites such as TripAdvisor.

Mr Mahmud, from Preston, Lancashire, said the new location was a significant step towards a top-end restaurant similar to the other top-end restaurants on his CV.

Mr Mahmud said: "It was a takeaway with some seats and a lot of people were asking why we were not a quality restaurant as well as selling alcohol because we were not selling alcohol.

"It was always our intention to be in a bigger, better place so we are able to cater for more and more people."

Mr Mahmud said the aim is to create at least one or two converts after opening on September 12.

Mr Mahmud said: "Our restaurant is Nishi Sushi and the word 'nishi' means 'west' so it is 'sushi from the west'. People think it is all raw but it is not all raw because there are fried sushi rolls and other things and when people try the fried sushi rolls they think 'oh, wow, this is amazing'.

"Slowly they'll try raw sushi rolls then they'll try other things like sashimi and temaki. We created a lot of people like this in Chorley and I hope we will create a lot of people like this in Stretford."

Nishi Sushi's address is at 164A Barton Road, Stretford, Trafford, M32 8DP.
