The first Trafford Community Awards has recognised local heroes at a special ceremony.

Almost 100 nominees attended Trafford College in celebration of local community groups and volunteers.

The new awards, which replaced the Trafford Volunteer Awards, acknowledge those who have helped the lives of residents in the borough.

One of the many award winners is Lucy Ryder, who works with the Little Green Sock Project and received the Young Volunteer Award.

Speaking on how she feels about the work the charity does, Lucy said: “They are supporting loads of people who really need them. The work is amazing.”

The project, based in Stretford, has helped more than 1,000 children in poverty by providing them with clothing donated by those in the community.

Lucy is described as an “invaluable volunteer” who brings hard work and compassion to everything she does.

The charity says a third of children in Greater Manchester are living in poverty and over 11,000 of those children live in Trafford.

Catherine D’Albertanson, co-founder and chief executive of the charity, said: “Lucy’s warmth and determination make a lasting impact on both the team and the families we support.”

The charity said they are immensely proud of Lucy who, despite personal challenges, has continued to show dedication and commitment to improving the lives of children in the community.

Catherine also said it was rewarding to see Lucy’s skills grow through her work with the Little Green Sock Project.

Lucy said: “It has helped me be more confident. I like the people and I like chatting to the people.”

Councillors joined together to thank those who help the community make it a better place.
