Olympic hero Dame Laura Kenny will help switch on the Christmas lights in Altrincham on Saturday - and we have all the details of the fun that is in store on the day.

The event will run from 3pm to 6pm, with live performances and festive activities organised by Altrincham BID.

Dame Laura Kenny, Britain's "most successful female Olympian" with five gold and one silver medal, will light up the town to officially kick off Christmas.

The event will be hosted by Happy Radio's Darren Proctor and Chelsea Norris, and will centre on the themes of sustainability and sport.

On the Switch-on stage on Regent Road, a variety of live entertainment will take place.

Performers include Amanda Jane Heywood, Imogen-Paige, Little Belters, The Music Place Choir, and St Ambrose School Choir.

A unique feature of this year's event will be stage lighting powered by pedal power, in collaboration with local gyms, fitness studios, and players from Altrincham Football Club and Manchester Storm.

This is part of Altrincham's commitment to green initiatives and active travel.

Altrincham BID director Mandy White said: "We would like to extend a huge thank you to the businesses who have sponsored this year’s switch-on.

"The forecast predicts chilly weather, so wrap up in your hats, scarves, and gloves and head into town for the festive celebrations and then why not stay for a bite to eat or a drink in one of the many restaurants, bars and pubs in the town."

The festivities extend beyond the stage, with M&S hosting a special appearance by Percy Pig and Colin the Caterpillar.

Rhode Island Coffee will stay open later than usual, offering £2.50 hot chocolates to keep attendees warm.

Other cafés and coffee shops will also be serving festive drinks and treats.

Waterstones will host a Christmas evening with Penny Neville-Lee and Jarvis, who will be signing copies of their books and creating "Christmassy" drawings in-store.

They will be open until 7pm for the switch-on.

A temporary road closure will be in place on Regent Road for the duration of the event, but pedestrian access and access to town centre car parks will be maintained.

The audience area will be on George Street.
