A woman who made hundreds of nuisance calls to police and racially abused a passer-by in the street has been sentenced.

Brenda Russell, of Hartford Gardens, Timperley, appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court on October 30 to be sentenced for two counts of using abusive words to cause harassment, two counts of possession of a Class B drug and one count of intentionally causing a public nuisance, all of which she pleaded guilty to.

On October 26, 2022, the 53-year-old hurled racial abuse at a passer-by on Hartford Gardens.

When Russell was arrested, she was found to be in possession of cannabis. 

Nearly a year later, on August 16, 2023, she shouted abuse at a mother and daughter who were sat on a bench at Piccadilly Gardens and was once again found to have cannabis when she was arrested.

Russell then began a campaign of making nuisance calls to Greater Manchester Police in early December 2023, making a total of 270 calls to police between then an early June this year.

She was handed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for six months, and she was ordered to undergo treatment for alcohol dependency for a period of six months.

Russell was also ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, attend 10 days of rehabilitation activity requirement and pay £1,200 in compensation.
