Timp-erley Taverners progressed to the quarter finals of the Altrincham Saturday League cup as they beat reigning champions Stretford Vics. for the third time this season.
On 35 minutes Taverners bagged the opening goal when a cross from the left by Paul Lowe was headed in by the in-rushing Christian Harris.
Vics hit Taverners on the break and Martin Payne made it 1-1 with just five minutes of the second half gone.
A tactical change bore fruit for Taverners when Lee Williams was put through and his shot from the edge of the box swerved past the keeper to put Taverners back in front at 2-1.
Six minutes later Taverners got the cushion of a third goal as Mike Fitzgerald played top scorer Danny Wilding through and the big striker powered the ball into the top corner from close range to make it 3-1.
Stretford had a number of attempts as they tried to claw themselves back into the game, but in the dying minutes Leigh Weatherill broke forward and drew the defenders before slipping the ball to his strike partner Danny Wilding who stabbed the ball past the diving keeper and in via both posts.
There's another cup game for Taverners on Saturday as they take on Broadheath Central in the FA Senior Cup semi-final (British Airways Club, 2-0 p.m.)
