A SALE woman whose husband died from cancer has been raising money to fight the disease.
Elaine Gibson, of Glebelands Road, decided something needed to be done to help other cancer sufferers after husband Walter passed away in April.
So she took action - and together with one of Walter's old friends, Bob Wattage, organised a raffle of a bike Walter had won during the 1998 World Cup.
Along with family and friends, Elaine managed to raise £900 for charity, from which £535 was sent to the appeals section at Christies Hospital, where Walter had been a patient.
The rest of the money went on purchasing a shringe driver - a machine that prevents cancer patients from feeling sick - which Elaine generously donated to the Bodmin Road Clinic in Sale.
The gift was especially appreciated as there had been only one other shringe driver operating in the community.
Walter was a stonemason by trade and enjoyed spending his spare time with his four grandchildren, watching Manchester United play and socialising with friends at his local, The Plough.
He was also a keen golf enthusiast, which is why the Plough Golf Society held a 'Golf Day/Dinner' at Ashton-on-Mersey Golf Club in memory of Walter on Friday, October 4.
The winner won a cup, sponsored by Walter's close friend Liam Foley, which Elaine presented during dinner.
She also brought the shringe driver along, which bears a plaque dedicating it to the loving memory of Walter Gibson, to show family and friends the fruit of their labour.
