THE Imperial War Museum North is set to beat its own target for attracting visitors in its first year of operation.

More than 200,000 people have gone through the doors in the first 13 weeks since it opened.

Its aim was to attract 300,000 in the first 12 months and it is two thirds of the way to that target after just one third of the year.

The new museum has already played a vital role in promoting Trafford and through its innovative volunteer programme it has provided local people with new educational opportunities.

And a total of 200 people from the priority regeneration neighbourhoods around the museum have been given work experience at the museum.

Leader of Trafford, David Acton said: "I am delighted that the museum is an outstanding success.

"The council's investment and commitment in the museum has helped to draw in the visitors to the most innovative attraction on the Quays and I hope that is will continue to attract many more visitors."

The museum, which was constructed with a £2.8million investment from Trafford council, is open seven days a week and it is free to get in.

Chief executive of Trafford council, Carole Hassan said: "The numbers visiting the museum highlights the success of Trafford's vision to support the project and it shows that our reputation as a leading tourist and visitor destination is growing regionally and nationally."
