URMSTON-based company Soreen has raised £25,000 for Cancer Research UK's women-only 'Race For Life' initiative - from sales of its malt loaf.

The Taylor Road firm raised the cash by donating 1 pence from 2.5 million packs of its fruity loaves sold over the summer. Each promotional pack featured information about the race and encouraged shoppers to take part.

The money raised is the largest single donation by the company to a good cause and will be used to fund research into cancers that affect women.

The Race For Life concept involving 250,000 women in 100 five kilometre races across the country broke all previous records this year, and raised £15 million for Cancer Research UK.

BBC GMR Radio presenter Jane Hodson received the cheque on behalf of Race For Life. Jane hosted the stage presentation of this year's Manchester race in June, which was the best-attended event in the history of the series. Almost 8,000 women took part.

Three female Soreen employees - Helen Parker, Stephanie Sammut and Alison Shields - flew the flag for the company in the Manchester race and raised nearly £300 in sponsorship.
