FA Cup: Horden 2, Trafford 1
TRAFFORD crashed out of the FA Cup at Horden on Saturday when two second half goals gave the North Easterners victory and a chance of a bumber pay day in the next round.
The winners of Saturday's game were guaranteed an FA pay cheque of £1,000 but more importantly, a home tie in the Second Round where a further victory would earn them £7,500.
Trafford started confidently with debutant Mario Daniels catching the eye and in the 15th minute, he shot inches wide from the edge of the penalty area.
Midfielder Andy Morris then saw his shot well saved by Tierney before, in the 25th minute, the Shawe View men stormed ahead when Steve Sutcliffe overlapped down the right and crossed for Dave Collins to net from close range.
There was little goalmouth action for the remainder of the first half but the turning point of the game came in the 55th minute when the referee awarded Trafford a penalty for a foul on Alan Cowley. However, the official then changed his mind to give a free kick on the edge of the area, Tierney saving from Morris.
Four minutes later Horden were back on level terms, when Trafford failed to clear a cross from the right and home centre back Martin headed powerfully past Paul Burke.
In the 65th minute disaster struck for Trafford when Burke dropped a cross from the left under intense pressure from Horden's strikers and I'Anson slotted the ball home.
Shortly afterwards Cowley's header was tipped over the crossbar by Tierney, I'Anson broke clear but shot wide of the visitors goal and Trafford substitute Tom Beech drilled in a shot that was cleared off the line.
Trafford battled valiantly for the equaliser but it wasn't to be and they trooped disconsolately from the field having been beaten 2-1 in the world's most famous cup competition.
On Saturday Trafford return to league action with a trip to Kendal Town and then next Wednesday they travel to play newly promoted Potteries side Kidsgrove Athletic. The kick off 7-45 pm.
