A PLAYGROUP threatened with closure because of a cash crisis has earned a reprieve.
The St Matthew's playgroup in Stretford has received a £7,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Manchester.
The lifeline means it can keep its doors open to tots in the area.
But it is still appealing for more parents to use the Chapel Road group - as only half of its 40 places have so far been filled.
SUM revealed in April that the 18 year-old playgroup faced a struggle for survival after Government funding for assisted places was withdrawn.
Helper and mum of three Liz Powell said: "We are absolutely delighted to have got this grant - it is a huge relief. It means the playgroup is secure for another year and we can apply for another grant next year.
"The funding will go towards running costs and also means we can replace a lot of equipment that is dated and worn out - climbing frames, bikes, puzzles and games."
She said it is an invaluable facility for children in the area, including her own: "My eldest child has just gone through the playgroup and it has been such a benefit to him. It has helped to give him confidence and social skills. My next child, who is two and a half, will start there in November."
She appealed for parents to help to fill the remaining places. The playgroup is open three mornings a week, Wednesday to Friday, from 9.30am to 11.45am. It takes children from two and a half years-old and the cost for each one is £3.25 a day. Any parents interested in finding out more can call Liz on 865 9681.
